I am working on a book for Rug Hooking Magazine about hooking skies, and have a call for submissions- the deadline is May 1, 2024! Please contact me at hookingskies@gmail.com with inquiries and submissions.

SEEKING SUBMISSIONS: HOOKED RUGS OF SKIES

Rug Hooking Magazine is seeking submissions of hooked skies for a new book “The Sky’s the Limit” to be published in 2025, edited by Áine M. Humble (Nova Scotia). This book will focus on how people have hooked their skies and will be an informative and inspirational resource for many rug hookers. The book will consist of the following sky categories: (1) general (daytime sunny), (2) overcast, (3) night, (4) stormy, (5) sunsets/sunrises, (6) Northern lights, (7) abstract, (8) solar system, and (9) minis (rugs smaller than 64 inches squared).

For this book, we are looking for rugs where the sky is meant to be the STAR of the rug or skies that have a WOW! Factor!

Please submit inquiries and submissions by May 1, 2024 to Áine Humble at hookingskies@gmail.com. Submit one photograph of the rug, using at least an 8MP (megapixel) camera.* Please label your rug in this format: “first-name-last-name-rug-title”. Up to three submissions are allowed.

In your submission, please provide the following information:
1. Your name and city/province or state/country
2. Title of rug, dimensions (in inches), and materials used
3. Year of completion
4. Type of design: (1) original design, (2) adapted work (provide copyright information/ approval), or (3) commercial
5. Name of photographer, if different from the submitter
6. Identify the suggested category (e.g., overcast, stormy)
7. A 200-300 word description that focuses on how you hooked the rug (only for categories 1-8, descriptions are not required for mini rugs). Below are some suggested questions for you to think about, with emphasis on item b:
a) What inspired you to make the rug? Where did the idea for your rug come from?
b) How did you hook the sky?
c) Did any other rug hookers (e.g., a rug hooking teacher/retreat) or artists (e.g., Van Gogh) influence how you approached your sky? If so, please list/describe.
d) Did any challenges occur in the hooking of the sky? If so, how did you deal with them?
e) What aspect of the sky are you most proud of?
f) What do you like about skies or about hooking skies?
